about

bio:
Nico Smith (they/them) is a queer + trans mixed-media sculpture artist born and raised in New Jersey, currently based in Durham, North Carolina. They earned a BA with a focus in Sculpture from Montclair State University in 2017.
statement:
I use art as an investigative tool; to poke and prod at uncomfortable feelings, experiences, and memories. I'm intrigued by bodies - specifically their grotesque, vulnerable, and rejected parts. I am also drawn to exploring the expectations of gender, femininity, and the inevitable goriness of Life.
I enjoy exploring many different media and techniques, and collaborating with the materials and letting them guide me. At the moment I am primarily using clay, wax, and fibers to explore themes of ugliness/otherness/disgust.
